Celebration Details In commemorating our 63rd anniversary of independence, the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Los Angeles and the Indonesian Community in Los Angeles would like to invite Los Angelinos and the general public to join us in a festival of the Indonesian tradition and heritage. This public event, called “Celebration of Diversity: Indonesian Day 2008”, is scheduled to be held on Saturday, August 30th, 2008 from 10.00 a.m. – 21.00 p.m. The venue is at the vicinity of the Consulate at 3457 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90010. The program of celebration is designed to display the richness and diversity of Indonesia's many forms of traditional and modern cultures such as: Cultural performances Experience the sight and sounds of the Indonesian culture: traditional dances and arts, new innovative crafts, and combinations of both worlds from different islands of Indonesia. The highlight of the event will be performances by world caliber Indonesian artists.
The list will include well-known Balinese and Javanese gamelan performances, together with the Kolintang musics, traditional dances from the people of Aceh, Batak, Minangkabau, Makasar, Sunda, Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara as well as other parts of Indonesia, cultural ceremonies, reog, martial arts and many others. Joining the merriness also include Indonesian contemporary singers and bands.
Cultural display and exhibit Discover the beauty of the workmanship of many Indonesian artists spanning from different cultures and backgrounds. Batik artists will entertain the audience in making traditional batik paintings dan dying.
Showcase Los Angeles-based Indonesian enterprises exhibit An expo of many Indonesian made products, businesses and other Indonesia-related organizations. Culinary samples from the many regions of Indonesia. At the food bazaar, sample the savory taste of different Indonesian cuisines such as rendang or sate, from the spices of Sumatra, the sweet tasting delicacies of Java, and many more!
Be a part of history! On the day of the celebration, the Indonesian community of Los Angeles will also try a historic feat by calling the thousands Indonesians and non-Indonesians to wear Batik, a national attire, as well as other traditional dresses. We hope to attract enough participants to break the Indonesian National Record (MURI) for having the most people wearing Batik in a single event in a foreign country.
The Indonesian Community in Los Angeles It is recorded that Southern California, especially Los Angeles, is home to the largest Indonesian population in the United States. The Indonesian community has been a part of the cultural melting pot since the 1960s. They come from a land rich with culture and traditions, for Indonesia is home to many ethnic groups and beliefs. Therefore, the community members’ own diverse traditions and culture have long had their share in rich cultural diversity of the greater Los Angeles area. The community has also been continually supportive of many Los Angeles based activities, including the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic International Community parade, the 3rd largest community attendance during the 150th anniversary of Los Angeles County as well as the annual Lotus Festival in the Echo Park. The Consulate Office Since 1982, the Consulate General of Indonesia Los Angeles has been a central hub for the activities of the Indonesian Community in Los Angeles. Located in Koreatown, the office of the Consulate General Indonesia is at the center of diverse international communities in Los Angeles. In commemoration of the 63rd Independence Day of the our nation, the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia Los Angeles will offer the first ever large-scale Indonesian individual festival to the cultural city of Los Angeles as a celebration of diversity. We also hope that this event will strengthen the Sister City relationship between our capital Jakarta and the city of Los Angeles that has been well established so far. As we celebrate our own unique diversity, we also welcome the diverse communities of Los Angeles to attend this event. The event itself is open to public and will be attended by many foreign dignitaries.
